The ‘Bodice Ripper’ graduation collection by Nino O’Connel is inspired by a folktale of Aarne-Thompson-Uther type 955, called ‘Bobby Rag’. The folktale tells the story of a poor girl who is stolen for marriage by a rich man, who then tries to be rid of her, resulting in retribution. The visuals which were collected to illustrate this story are grotesque and sublime, these two areas are wed beyond the realm of the ordinary limits of experience. Nino’s collection is based on this story because in it he saw an opportunity to illustrate the uncertainty of a transition. Transitions which involve violations of bodily integrity (grotesque) in the attempt to reach a moment of being outside of corporeal limits (sublime).
